For most kids, Coach Mark will be the first coach they ever have. We take that seriously.
Most leagues start at 6 or 7. Coach Mark teaches kids how to throw, catch, dribble, and kick before the pressure of a real season — on your schedule, with your friends, just for the love of the game.
Coach Mark is always up to date — pick a slot, fill in details, and you are confirmed.
No season sign-ups. No worrying if your kid will lose interest. Just pick a slot, show up, and let them fall in love with sport.
Browse available sessions and pick what works for your family. Morning, afternoon, weekend — Coach Mark keeps slots flexible.
Coordinate with other parents and book the same session. Up to 6 kids per session so it never feels like a crowd.
No gear required to start. Coach Mark handles everything. Your kid throws their first strike, drains their first bucket, and goes home beaming.
Pay per session. That's it. No commitment to a whole season, no team fees, no equipment costs upfront.
Every session is sport-specific so kids learn the real fundamentals without information overload.
Throwing, catching, fielding ground balls, and hitting off a tee. Before tee ball starts, let's make sure they know the basics.
Dribbling, passing, shooting form — without making a 5-year-old feel like they're in a drill. It's all games and movement.
Throwing spirals, catching, route running. Flag football fundamentals in a safe, fun setting with no tackling.
The fastest-growing sport in America — and surprisingly perfect for young kids. Great hand-eye coordination and super fun.
How to act on a course and enough skills to walk 9 holes with dad. Golf is a life skill — we start it early.
Bumping, setting, and serving at kid height. Just the fundamentals and a lot of laughing.
Dribbling, passing, shooting, and basic field awareness. Room to run and room to mess up.
Cornhole, frisbee toss, and athletic development. Sometimes the best practice does not look like practice at all.
Coach Mark is married to Tommie Lucas, Jefferson County Teacher of the Year and a teacher at Washington High School right here in Charles Town.
Coach Mark Lucas has spent 16 years as a high school teacher — and has spent every one of those years coaching kids in the Jefferson County community where he lives and where his own kids play ball.
His coaching resume is not a credential on a wall. It is years of showing up. High school baseball. High school basketball. Tee ball. Coach pitch. Kid pitch. JCLL youth basketball. JCLL youth soccer.
His son Palmer is 7. His daughter Joey is 4. They are both athletes. That is not an accident.
When you bring your child to First Play Sports, you are not dropping them off with a stranger. You are handing them to someone who has spent a career earning the right to be called Coach.

Tee ball through high school in baseball, basketball, and soccer
Palmer, 7, and Joey, 4 — his proof of concept
Coach Mark has spent four years coaching his own kids in local leagues right here in Jefferson County. He knows exactly what a 4-year-old needs from their first coach. Spoiler: it is not a whistle and a clipboard. — they need someone who makes learning feel like playing.
"I'll coach your kid on your schedule. The goal isn't to make them a star — it's to make sure they actually want to come back."
Every session runs like a real practice. Coach Mark runs drills, teaches fundamentals, and gives every kid individual attention. Your child will know what it feels like to have a coach in their corner before they ever step onto a team. That foundation is something they carry with them forever.
Every session has a plan, a skill focus, and a clear beginning and end.
Coach Mark teaches. Every kid leaves having learned something specific.
4-6 kids per session means your child is never invisible.
When you sign your child up for a rec league, you get whoever shows up. Maybe a great coach. Maybe a well-meaning dad who volunteered because nobody else did. You have no idea until you get there.
First Play Sports does not work that way.
Every session is Coach Mark. Not a substitute. Not a staff rotation. Not whoever was available that day. Coach Mark shows up, runs the session, coaches your kid, and goes home. You know exactly who your child is spending 45 minutes with — and you know they are going to be good at it. Because Coach Mark is the only reason First Play Sports exists.
That is not a small thing. That is the whole thing.
We've heard them all.
Not all at once. Coach Mark runs sport-specific sessions and rotates based on the season and what families are interested in. Baseball is the featured sport this spring. New sports are added regularly — follow along or reach out to find out what is coming next.
That's literally the whole point! Coach Mark specializes in first-timers. Zero experience needed — not even knowing what the sport is.
Absolutely. Gamedays are available. No pressure to buy a pack, no commitment to anything after that first session.
Yes! Grab 4–6 families, all book the same time slot, and make it your own little crew. It's the most fun way to do it.
Ages 4 through 9. Too young for most leagues, but exactly the right age to start learning and building that love of sport.
Nope. Coach Mark supplies everything you need. Just bring your kid in comfortable clothes and sneakers. That said, if your child has their own glove, bat, or set of golf clubs they love, bring them! There is nothing better than a kid playing with gear that already feels like theirs.
Each session is sport-specific, but your pack sessions can be used across any sport. Great for kids who haven't found their thing yet.
No commitment. Just a good time on the field, court, or diamond. Pick a slot and let's go.
